Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences Ranks Among World’s Top 300 Universities in Three Subjects in Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2026
According to a report released by the Office of Accreditation and Rankings, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences has been placed among the top 300 universities in the world in three subjects (Food Science & Technology, Dentistry & Oral Sciences, and Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences) in this year's Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), further strengthening its international standing.
Now in its 10th consecutive year, the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects evaluates more than 2,000 universities from over 100 countries. GRAS assesses institutions across 57 subjects grouped into five broad fields: Natural Sciences (8 subjects), Engineering (25 subjects), Life Sciences (4 subjects), Medical Sciences (6 subjects), and Social Sciences (14 subjects). Unlike the Academic Ranking of World Universities, GRAS places special emphasis on the research capacity and performance of eligible universities within each subject and scientific field. This year's results are based on research data and outputs from 2021 to 2025, drawn from the Web of Science database and analyzed using the InCites tool.
In this year's GRAS list, Iranian universities were assessed and ranked among the world's top 1,000 institutions in 33 of the 57 subjects. Within the six medical science subjects, including Public Health, Nursing, Dentistry & Oral Sciences, and Medical Technology, eight Iranian universities appear on the list.
GRAS indicators are grouped into five categories: World-Class Faculty, World-Class Output, High-Quality Research, Research Impact, and International Collaboration.
The World-Class Faculty category includes four indicators: International Academic Award Laureates (Laureate), Highly Cited Researchers (HCR), Chief Editors of International Academic Journals (Editor), and International Academic Organization Leadership (Leadership). The World-Class Output category comprises Top Journal Papers (TJ) and International Academic Awards (Award). Q1 Journal Papers (Q1) fall under the High-Quality Research category, Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI) falls under Research Impact, and International Collaborated Papers (IC) falls under International Collaboration. The lists of top journals, international academic awards, and key academic organizations are determined through the Academic Excellence Survey (AES) conducted by ShanghaiRanking.
The university's placement among the top 300 in these three subjects reflects its scientific and research strength in these specialized fields and stands as a testament to the dedication of its faculty members and researchers. It also signals the university's readiness to expand scientific and research collaboration with leading universities and research institutions worldwide.
Dr. Mortazavi, Vice-Chancellor of International Affairs, expressed gratitude to the university's researchers, faculty members, and staff for their role in achieving this ranking, and voiced hope for continued progress in future international rankings. He also emphasized the importance of identifying underutilized capacities that could significantly advance the university's international scientific research relationships and partnerships.
