A Conference with a Green Approach
19th National Conference on Green Management & 17th National Conference on HR Empowerment through a Green Approach
On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences Productivity Management, in collaboration with the Green Management Association of Iran, hosted a conference on Green Management at the Emam Khomaini conference hall, School of Medicine.
The conference aimed to introduce the latest advancements in Management Knowledge and Green Engineering, fostering a competitive atmosphere focused on reducing executive expenses and environmental pollution at the university level.
The event was attended by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, members of the SBMU Board, directors of hospitals and health centers, presidents of medical universities, members of specialty committees, as well as the director and members of the Green Management Association.
In recognition of its significant efforts in promoting green initiatives, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences was awarded a Green Approach certificate by the Green Management Association of Iran.
After years of national achievements in Green Management and receiving numerous awards and honors for productivity and sustainability at the university, hospital, and health center levels, our university is now prepared to compete on the international stage. We have provided extensive training in green management to our directors and staff and are ready to be evaluated based on global standards. As a testament to our readiness, we have registered for the UI Green Metric international ranking system, and in the coming months, our efforts will be assessed.
The UI Green Metric World University Ranking is a ranking on green campus and environmental sustainability initiated by Universitas Indonesia in 2010. Through 39 indicators in 6 criteria, UI Green Metric World University Rankings prudently determined the rankings by universities’ environmental commitment and initiatives.
To commemorate this green movement, attendees were gifted books, including"HR Management with a Green Approach," "The Green Executive: Corporate Leadership in a Low Carbon Economy," "Aesthetics of Nature & Climate Change," and "Risk Communication."
This conference marks a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainable practices and our readiness to engage with the global green management community.
This conference aimed to:
1. Introduce the essence and relative advantages of the fourth generation of Green Knowledge (Green Intelligence) in the country's economic development.
2. Highlight the importance of quality, environmental preservation (first generation), green industry (second generation), and producing eco-friendly products (third generation).
3. Present methodologies and define economic affairs in Eco-language (wastewater, waste, carbon) to reduce expenses and environmental pollution.
4. Discuss methods of green management (humanity, system, and technology) and Green Engineering (quality, economics, environment).
5. Recognize associations that have implemented the fourth generation of green knowledge during the current year and achieved measurable outcomes.
Achieving these goals, along with the optimal use of resources, makes this conference a scientific green event. Each instance of environmental pollution and expense is the result of resource consumption.
To align with these aims, considering the following items was essential for conference members:
Time Management:
Being present at the conference on time to ensure the program starts promptly. This helps reduce and manage heating, cooling, and lighting resource consumption to acceptable levels.
Energy Management:
Sitting at the front and avoiding dispersed seating to help the conference manager turn off the back lights and lower the temperature, reducing the energy used to warm the hall to a minimum.
Water Management:
When using the washroom, be mindful of water and toilet paper usage. Additionally, it is better to let your hands dry naturally without using hand dryers or napkins.
Optimized Paper Consumption:
Taking notes from conference material is important, as it helps us remember our learnings. However, to conserve paper, prioritize taking notes on smartphones over traditional paper. This ensures that the training materials are saved and available at any time.
Green Coffee Break
Disposable and Reusable Drinkware:
During morning hospitality, we aim to use reusable tumblers and cups and keep them for the rest of the day. While the management team wanted to use glassware, the limitations on washing them at the conference venue and the carbon and water usage due to the large number of attendees led to abandoning this idea.
Sweets and Pastries without Packaging and Expiry Date:
To reduce waste and preserve attendees' health, we decided to order fresh cakes. We won’t use plastic dishes; instead, participants will receive a napkin to cover their finger foods or pastries.
Tea Spoon:
We are mindful of the use of plastic spoons and the number of times they are used.
Green Lunch:
We benefit from the SBMU restaurant and hope to successfully implement our green approach.
Tea and Coffee:
To avoid waste from single-serve coffee and tea bags, we decided to serve tea and coffee in traditional form.
Green Transportation:
Parking lots at the conference venue are available to guests. We acknowledge our social responsibility to reduce air pollution by using public transportation. If we choose to drive to the venue, it would be better to carpool with colleagues and friends attending the meeting.
Note: Environmental pollution (waste, wastewater, and carbon) will be calculated in the product life cycle. Therefore, the pollution generated is not solely from the resources consumed during the conference.
