Publication of two articles by Professor Mozaffari, the SBMU academic staff and the Vice-Dean in Academic Affairs and Graduate Studies at the SBMU School of Medicine

The research project entitled "Comparisons of medicinal leech therapy with venous catheterization in the treatment of venous congestion of the sural flap" is a protocol conducted for the first time in the world. Venous congestion is a danger threatening different sural flaps in, which may result in the partial or total flap necrosis. Sometimes, leech therapy is used to reduce the venous congestion, and this per se may result in infection or inefficiency in evacuating the arterial blood. The present study was performed with the lowest cost (may be a couple of dollars) through utilizing a catheter. The process is fast, simple, inexpensive, without any side-effects, and very effective. By utilizing a catheter, there would be enough chances to evacuate adequate amount of venous blood. Moreover, it would be possible to measure the amount of blood evacuated, which does not result in the infection brought about by leech therapy. 

In cases where this method has been used, there have been no complications seen and the the flaps have been saved.

The article has been published in Microsurgery Journal [Jan, 2011; 31(1):36-40]the outstanding journal in the USA as the first Iranian published article in the field.

The second article by Professor Mozaffari is "Parachute technique: a complimentary method in zone II tendon repair". Zone II is a difficult location, and in case when the tendons are lacerated due to their anatomical conditions, the tendon repair would require special care and delicacy. The article presents a new technique known as “parachute” in lacerated tendons, and prevents tendon volumes in the repair area which may result in their stiffness causing laceration and adhesiveness. Moreover, the technique empowers the repair and maintenance in the repair area.

The article has been published in the 2011 issue of the Journal of “Technique of Hand Surgery” Volume 15, No 2 pages 78-81.
