SBMU in collaboration with the East Mediterranean Committee Held the First International Congress on Optometry
Social Relations of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical sciences: The first international congress on optometry was held on the 16thand 17thOctober, 2014 in School of Nursing and Midwifery in presence of Dr.Afshin Zarghi, Vice Chancellor in Research Affairs, Dr.Minoo Khalkhali, Dean of the School of Rehabilitation, Dr.Mohammad Aghazadeh Amiri, Scientific Director of the congress , some other professors and specialists from inside the country and abroad.
Dr.Zarghi , in the opening ceremony, delivered his lecture in English , welcomed all participants and also introduced SBMU as a high potential university. He also referred to the presence of 12 schools, 17 training hospitals, 2 development centers , 20 Knowledge based institutes, and a huge laboratory which can provide a great opportunity for research activities both in national and international levels.
He pointed out to SBMU standing at the second place in ESI ranking. He said that SBMU is honored to benefit from 1300 faculty members, 200 of which are full professors, 400 associate professors and the rest are assistant professors who are involved in training 13000 students in different levels and degrees of education.
Vice Chancellor in Research Affairs referred to the development of IT management as one of the most important measures which was taken 8 months ago as well as conducting applied and product-centered research and establishing an office to record ideas which is supposed to be in charge of recording, protecting and guiding scientific ideas. He also briefly pointed out to some remarkable achievements of the university during the current academic year including publication of 3000 study articles which have been indexed in most of the journals, 40% growth in the rate of research, a three-time increase in the number of knowledge-based institutes and 100% growth in research projects.
Dr. Zarghi gave news about unveiling five IT projects which will be available in the market next year in February, 22ndof Bahman_ day of revolution of Islamic Republic of Iran. He said: “we hope to inaugurate the biggest clean room of Iran on the day of revolution too”. H e stated that establishing a clean a room would pave the way and facilitate the process of producing many types of drugs such as cancer, bio and nanotechnology drugs. He also said that two new drugs will be unveiled during the decade of revolution of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Afterwards, Dr.Amiri, Scientific Director of the congress, gave a speech on the objectives of this program that was to introduce potentials of the university in the field of optometry and ophthalmology to the regional countries, East Mediterranean region and India. He pointed out to one of the most important aspects of this scientific event which was the presence of some eminent professors of optometry and ophthalmology including Prof. Minto representative of word council of Optometry and Dr. Owada, Chief of the East Mediterranean Committee as well as others from medical universities. He hoped this congress would be an important advertising step towards absorbing more foreign students in this major to study at SBMU.
He added that articles submitted to this congress were based on implementation of The thirdstep isto implementpreventivehealthreformplanblindness and impaired vision.
