Retaining its position as the second-ranked medical university in Iran for another consecutive year, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences achieved an international ranking of 1,891 among 10,827 universities and research institutions evaluated in the 2026 SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR).

The SCImago ranking system evaluates institutions annually based on three main categories: Research (50%), Innovation (30%), and Societal Impact (20%).

In the Research category, scientific output and research excellence are assessed using 11 indicators, accounting for 50% of the overall score. These indicators include Normalized Impact (NI), Excellence with Leadership (EwL), Output, Scientific Leadership (L), Not Own Journals (NotOJ), Own Journals (OJ), Excellence (Exc), High-Quality Publications (Q1), International Collaboration (IC), Open Access (OA), and Scientific Talent Pool (STP). In this category, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences ranked 1,100th worldwide, third nationally, and second among Iranian medical universities.

The Innovation category, which carries a 30% weight, evaluates knowledge transfer and technology through three indicators: Innovative Knowledge (IK), Patents (PT), and Technological Impact (TI). The university ranked 4,889th internationally in this category.

The final category, Societal Impact, accounts for 20% of the overall score and measures an institution's web visibility and social impact using six indicators: Media Mentions (MM), Web Size (WS), Authority Score (AScore), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Female Scientific Talent Pool (FemSTP), and Impact on Public Policy (Overton). In this category, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences ranked 1,756th worldwide, while placing second in Iran and second among Iranian medical universities.

In addition to the overall institutional rankings, the SCImago ranking system provides subject-specific evaluations across 19 academic disciplines, offering a more detailed picture of institutional performance.

In the 2026 rankings, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences achieved the following global positions:

- Dentistry: 56th among 1,117 universities

- Medicine: 326th among 6,116 universities

- Pharmacy, Toxicology and Pharmaceutics: 364th among 4,711 universities

He stated that this achievement reflects the university's continuous efforts to enhance both the quantity and quality of its scientific research and to strengthen its research impact at the national and international levels. He also expressed hope that the university's continued progress will be reflected across all subject areas and ranking categories in future editions of the SCImago Institutions Rankings, as well as in other internationally recognized university ranking systems.
