Specific Care in Diabetes Prevention and Control Program
The “First Training Workshop of Specific Care in Diabetes Prevention and Control Program” was held in Payambar Azam Conference Hall of Research Institute for Endocrine Science on April 17-18, 2014. This workshop was in line with the purpose of health system improvement and promotion of health services targeting internists of selected hospitals working on diabetes urban program. This event was held in collaboration with Health Ministry and Research Institute for Endocrine Science, in which 70 internists took part from different parts of the country.
Dr.Fereidoun Azizi, head of the research institute and the initial programmer of the national program for prevention and control of diabetes, first welcomed participants and presented a brief history of previous studies, trend of prevalence, the present condition and also referred to the program for control of diabetes over the last two decades. He hoped that serious implementation of this program by internists would help to improve care for diabetic patients, and ultimately result in reduction of the cost which is imposed on health economy and major economic policies of the country.
Afterwards, Dr. Tara, head of the hospital management office and promotion of clinical services, having provided a report on the current prevalence of diabetes, delivered a speech on some parts of the program for improvement of the health system in the eleventh government, and also expressed his expectations of health service providers. Then, Dr.Ghotbi, in charge of diabetes program of hospital management office and promotion of clinical services, presented his speech on strategies, aims of the national program in referral system and description of responsibilities in different stages and levels of health services within the national program for prevention and control of diabetes. He also pre-tested the participants at the same time.
During the first day of this workshop, qualitative principles of diabetes care were presented based on ADA2014 standards in comparison with the national program, and also standards of the second stage of health services as well as medication, new generation of drugs and insulin therapy were discussed.
On the following day, diagnosis, initial treatment, referral indications and short-term and long-term complications of diabetes including retinopathy, micro vascular complications, diabetic foot and neuropathy were debated. Moreover, topic of diabetes in relation with pregnancy was taught separately by university professors and faculty members.
In the end, participants sat an exam, results of which could reveal the achievement of the workshop in terms of promoting participants knowledge.
