.
Professor Naser Simforoush, the SBMU Professor and the Director of the SBMU Kidney Transplantation Ward of Shahid Labbaffi Nejad Hospital, announced the successful simultaneous transplantation of kidney & pancreas at that hospital. The patient, he noted, “was suffering from an advanced diabetes and kidney malfunction, has been the fourth patient undergoing such a transplantation, and his condition is presently favorable”.
Professor Simforoush added that the diabetics, who suffer from diabetes side effects, such as ophthalmological, renal, cardiovascular, etc., can be treated with a simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplantation with no further need to worry about the diabetes side effects.
He further noted: “Through simultaneous pancreas transplantation with another body part, it is possible to prevent such complications as ophthalmological disorders, dialysis, leg amputation, lower extremity paralysis, bladder paralysis, etc.”
He also mentioned that in the operation, there had been two collaborating teams, and said: “in the operation, while the team for the pancreas transplantation was preparing the pancreas for transplantation, the kidney transplantation team transplanted the kidney on the left side of the patient’s body under the pelvis. Then, the other team did the pancreas transplantation on the right side of the pelvis, which was directed by Professors Saeedi, and Sadegh Beygi.
The operation lasted for about five hours, two hours for the kidney transplantation, and three hours for the pancreas transplantation.
According to Professor Simforoush, the patient’s kidney had started functioning well and produced urine; his creatinine level is normal with no need to use insulin.
He further added that the simultaneous transplantation of kidney and pancreas is a hard one compared with the kidney transplantation, and needs specialized care for kidney rejection.
