The first live arthroscopy in Akhtar Hospital

The first live course of arthroscopy in Iran was successfully performed in Akhtar Hospital.

Prof. Sohrab Keyhani, associate professor of SBMU, knee specialist and sports injuries and scientific director of the congress on Arthroscopy surgery, referred to knee and shoulder arthroscopy and meniscus transplant which were performed live, and the latter one was carried out via arthroscopy for the first time in Iran and live in the world.

Prof. Keyhani pointed out to trial performance of this live surgery in 2012 in Akhtar Hospital regarded as a high quality course of live surgery in Asia in which seven international and national prominent professors had participated.

In this congress, according to Prof.Keyhani, seven live surgeries were performed by foreign professors including South Korea (Prof. Yu,  Prof. Seong-ll Binand Prof. Jin Hwan Ahn), two surgeries by German professors, Prof. Prof. Dr. Ernst Wiedemann and Prof. Hermann O. Mayr, one surgery by Prof. Deepak Goyal from India, two surgeries by Prof. Sohrab Keyhani from SBMU (Iran) and Prof. Mohammad Razi from Iran University of Medical Sciences. Question and answer session was held during and after the surgery.

He added that in this congress of arthroscopic surgery surgeons encountered 11 difficult and complicated cases of surgery, especially on knee and shoulder, which were performed by arthroscopy. All of the participants were able to follow the whole procedure of surgery live. These surgeries included reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament, knee ligament repair and meniscus transplant which were performed non-invasively.

Prof. Keyhani continued his speech by referring to 10 cases of knee surgeries per week which are performed via arthroscopy in Akhtar Hospital. He also said that the reason why this surgery is performed as a congress for the first time with participation of more than 150 prominent national and international surgeons is that such complicated and difficult surgeries to be performed non-invasively with minimal complication is really interesting and remarkable for foreign association of surgeons. However, our country has already secured a significantly high position in the international level, and now Iranian surgeons are renown in the world in terms of new procedures of knee surgery.

In the end, Prof. Keyhani pointed out to the next round of this congress to be held in 2016.
