University Professor of SBMU School of Dentistry patented curved abutments for dental implants

This invention was made possible after two years of tireless efforts of Dr.Reza Eftekhar Ashtiani, Prosthodontics and Fellowship of implant Prosthodontics. He is now the Head of Prosthesis Institute and the central laboratory of the School of Dentistry. This invention helps to facilitate placement of crown in the site of implants which are not easily accessible. Thus, the curved abutment helps with better and easier quality crown placement.

Dr.Ashtiani added that in previous abutments, crown placement used to be done in the direction of opening and closing the mouth, so eating sticky food could cause separation of crown from the implant. This invention prevents such problems. Another common problem is lack of enough space between the implant and the front tooth. In this condition, the dentist has to use expensive abutment, but its new design has made it possible to place the crown in the minimal interdental distance without the fear of displacement. This improvement in the process of placing dental implants is due to the change in the direction of placing the crown on the abutment, which is unique in the world.

He stated that this invention was registered in State Organization for Registration of Deeds and Properties in 2014, and some steps have been taken to register it in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This invention was officially introduced in the Implant Congress in 2014 and the Congress of Dentistry in 2015.
