World Thyroid Day Symposium was Held

A symposium on World Thyroid Day was held on May 25, 2014. Prof. Fereydoun Azizi, Head of the SBMU Research Institute for Endocrine Science, highlighted the importance of this day and provided a brief report on national and international statistics according to various studies having been conducted so far. He also introduced different screening methods having been performed besides pointing out to their diagnostic value and degree of priority based on evidence. Afterwards, he continued his speech with a report on different prevention levels in Iran, which are particularly correlated with the findings of the Tehran Thyroid Study.

Prof. Shahin Yar Ahmadi, the representative of the Ministry of Health in disease fighting unit, delivered a speech on management principles of thyroid diseases, current programs of the Ministry of Health and thyroid national program in Iran.

A presentation on iodine deficiency in the twenty first century and adequate iodine supply to prevent iodine deficiency-induced diseases was delivered by Prof. Hossien Delshad, Director of the Prevention and Treatment of Obesity Research Center. Then, Prof. Farhad Hossein Panah, Chief of the endocrine DPT of Taleghani Hospital, presented a lecture on clinical diseases of thyroid and the importance of timely care.

In the second part of the symposium, Prof. Maryam Razaghi Azar, pediatric endocrinologist, delivered a lecture on screening and prevention of hypothyroidism. Also, Prof. Manouchehr Nakhjavani, professor of endocrinology of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, presented a speech on diagnosis and early treatment of thyroid cancers.

Moreover, a question and answer panel was held which was greatly welcomed by the participants.
